Advanced Java Deployments with Octopus
Blog post from Octopus Deploy
Octopus Deploy can coordinate advanced Java WAR application deployments across multiple servers by combining rolling deployments, child projects, task waiting, and manual approvals. The described approach deploys servers sequentially while stopping applications before deployment, launching multiple application deployments in parallel on each server, waiting for all deployments to finish, restarting applications, and requiring approval before proceeding to the next server. Individual child projects handle each application and use a prompted EnableLifecycle variable to optionally skip their own stop and start actions when they are orchestrated centrally. An orchestrator project uses rolling deployment with one target at a time, starts child deployments without waiting to create a fan-out pattern, captures their task IDs, and uses wait steps to create a fan-in point before restarting applications and requesting approval. This arrangement provides controlled multi-server deployments while preserving the ability to deploy each application independently.
