Everything you need to know about Microsoft’s basic authentication deprecation
Blog post from Nylas
Microsoft is set to deprecate basic authentication for Microsoft Exchange Accounts on October 1st, 2022, impacting Microsoft and Office 365 accounts as well as Exchange Server accounts in Hybrid Deployment, which will necessitate organizations and users to transition to more secure authentication methods like OAuth to avoid service disruptions. Basic authentication, which involves sending a username and password with each request, has been deemed less secure and is being phased out to bolster security for Microsoft Azure applications. Nylas advises users to prepare for this change by setting up an Azure App for Exchange Online and ensuring necessary Microsoft Graph permissions are configured to maintain functionality. Failure to migrate from basic authentication could disrupt services, as Nylas plans to stop supporting basic authentication and invalidate credentials for those accounts. To aid in this transition, Nylas provides guidance on using their API to identify affected users and suggests methods for re-authenticating them with OAuth. Additionally, they offer support through customer success managers and resources to help users adapt smoothly to these changes.
