Introducing dynamic task packing and Ultracache
Blog post from Nx
Nx Cloud introduces dynamic task packing and Ultracache to address the rapid growth in CI workloads driven by coding agents, which has increased test volumes, CI jobs, and compute costs at organizations such as Anthropic and Linear. Dynamic task packing uses historical CPU, memory, capacity, and dependency data to assign tasks across workers efficiently, prioritizing tasks that unlock downstream work and reportedly reducing VM minutes by 35–50% in optimized customer codebases. Ultracache is an automatic deterministic cache that observes each task’s actual file inputs and outputs, improving cache accuracy and hit rates without manual configuration while avoiding incorrect cache results. Combined with Nx’s task-based affected analysis, which skips tasks unaffected by code changes, these features can cache individual end-to-end test specifications and optimize workloads regardless of repository structure. Nx reports benchmark results of 9.2 times faster CI with 52% less compute in a 511-project monorepo and 11.7 times faster CI with 78% less compute in a large single React application, with both capabilities now available in Nx Cloud.
