Which platforms support forward-deployed control planes?
Blog post from Northflank
A forward-deployed control plane places a platform’s management functions, such as scheduling, policy, deployment state, identity, telemetry, and administrative workflows, inside a customer-controlled VPC, data centre, or disconnected environment rather than relying on a shared SaaS control plane. The term describes location rather than operational ownership, meaning a vendor or customer may operate the locally deployed system, and it differs from BYOC arrangements where workloads run in a customer account but the vendor retains a hosted management layer. Representative approaches include Northflank Enterprise, which offers a locally deployed application platform with services, jobs, data services, previews, workflows, sandboxes, and GPU support; Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, a customer-operated Kubernetes application platform that can be configured for disconnected use; SUSE Rancher Prime, which provides locally installed multi-cluster Kubernetes management; and Google Distributed Cloud air-gapped, an on-premises cloud stack designed to operate without Google Cloud connectivity. Selecting among them requires assessing which components and data flows remain local, who handles upgrades, backups, security, and recovery, whether zero-egress or full air-gapping is required, the level of developer self-service needed, and how support, licensing, identity, registries, observability, and disaster recovery function under restricted connectivity.
