What is a coding harness?
Blog post from Northflank
A coding harness is the infrastructure layer that enables coding agents to operate by providing an isolated execution environment with a shell, file system, repository access, credentials, networking, compute resources, and persistent storage. Unlike coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode, which determine and carry out coding tasks, the harness supplies the controlled workspace in which they run, execute commands, edit files, test code, and preserve state across sessions. It differs from agent frameworks, which manage model calls and workflows, and sandboxes, which primarily isolate code execution, although a harness may incorporate a sandbox as part of its environment. Harnesses can run locally for supervised development or remotely in cloud infrastructure, offering improved isolation, controlled credential access, collaboration, and continuity compared with running agents directly on a developer’s machine. Northflank Cloud Harnesses are presented as a managed or bring-your-own-cloud option supporting several coding agents through isolated microVMs, configurable resources, SSH access, persistent workspaces, and deployments in Northflank-managed infrastructure or customer cloud accounts.
