What are cloud coding agents?
Blog post from Northflank
Cloud coding agents are AI-powered development tools that execute tasks such as inspecting repositories, editing code, installing dependencies, and running tests within remote cloud workspaces rather than on a developer’s local machine. Unlike local agents, they use dedicated cloud compute, storage, networking, tools, and credentials, allowing isolated environments to persist across sessions, remain accessible remotely, and continue operating after a developer disconnects. Their operation typically involves an iterative loop in which the agent evaluates task context, consults a language model, executes actions through tools, observes results, and repeats until completion. Effective cloud agent environments require secure repository and model access, development tooling, configurable resources, networking, remote connectivity, and persistent storage. Northflank presents its Cloud Harnesses as managed, isolated microVM workspaces for agents including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, and Pi, available either on its managed infrastructure or through bring-your-own-cloud deployments in providers such as AWS, GCP, Azure, Oracle, and CoreWeave.
