How to run coding agents in the cloud
Blog post from Northflank
Running AI coding agents in cloud environments isolates them from local machines while providing dedicated compute, persistent storage, networking controls, remote SSH access, and the ability to continue long-running tasks after users disconnect. The guide presents Northflank Cloud Harnesses as managed, microVM-isolated workspaces supporting agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, Pi, and custom agents, with optional Git integration, team collaboration, configurable resources, and deployment either on Northflank-managed infrastructure or a customer’s own cloud through BYOC. Effective cloud agent environments require restricted repository access, securely injected authentication secrets, development tools, appropriately sized CPU and memory, persistent pause-and-resume capability, and carefully controlled network and credential permissions. Users can create a Harness through the Northflank dashboard, select and authenticate an agent, optionally connect a repository, configure runtime settings, storage, ports, and resources, then work through the browser terminal or SSH from a local terminal. Although cloud workspaces can improve isolation and operational control, secure use still depends on limiting access according to task requirements and reviewing agent-generated changes before production deployment.
