How to keep Claude Code running when you close your laptop
Blog post from Northflank
Claude Code sessions running locally stop when a laptop sleeps because the operating system suspends processes and network access, and terminal multiplexers such as tmux cannot prevent this. Users can keep a machine awake with macOS caffeinate and clamshell mode, Linux systemd-inhibit or power settings, and Windows lid-close settings, but these approaches can consume battery, generate heat, suffer from network interruptions, compete for local resources, and remain inaccessible from other devices. The text presents self-managed servers or VMs as a remote alternative that requires provisioning and maintenance, and promotes Northflank Cloud Harnesses as managed isolated cloud workspaces for Claude Code and other coding agents. Harnesses provide persistent storage, web-terminal and SSH access, configurable resources, per-workspace microVM isolation, and deployment on Northflank-managed infrastructure or supported bring-your-own-cloud accounts, allowing agents to continue after a user disconnects or closes their laptop. It also explains that users can pause Harnesses while preserving workspaces, monitor work from another device, and transfer local work only by committing and pushing progress before starting a new cloud session.
