How to give coding agents ephemeral development environments
Blog post from Northflank
Ephemeral development environments are task-specific workspaces that start from a known repository commit, toolchain, configuration, and scoped credentials, then are deleted after outputs such as Git commits are saved. For coding agents, they reduce inherited files, stale dependencies, credential exposure, task interference, and the effects of destructive actions, while improving reproducibility and enabling parallel work. Such environments typically require repository access, development tools and agent CLIs, isolation, configurable compute, credential management, and lifecycle controls. The text describes a local approach using Git worktrees and disposable Docker containers, while noting limitations including shared host resources, manual setup and cleanup, and dependence on a developer’s machine. It presents Northflank Cloud Harnesses as a cloud-based alternative supporting several coding agents, isolated microVMs, configurable resources, SSH and web-terminal access, optional workspace persistence, API automation, and deployment in managed cloud or customer-owned cloud accounts. It recommends disabling persistence for short, clean-slate tasks and enabling it when work must continue across sessions, with deletion after the work is pushed to Git.
