Summary

AI coding agents require controlled access to private repositories, databases, APIs, and internal services to perform development work, but their unattended execution of model-generated code creates risks that differ from interactive developer access. The recommended approach is least-privilege access through repository-specific deploy keys or short-lived tokens, dedicated database and service credentials, read-only permissions where possible, runtime secret injection, network restrictions, and isolated execution environments. Credentials should not be hardcoded in repositories, configuration files, or local environment files because agents may read, modify, commit, or expose them in logs; instead, organizations should use separate, scoped credentials for each agent and environment and rotate compromised secrets immediately. Northflank Cloud Harnesses are presented as a platform for implementing these controls through Git integrations, runtime environment variables and secret files, configurable networking, microVM isolation, persistent storage, and BYOC deployments that can keep agent traffic within an organization’s cloud infrastructure.
