New Relic acquires Pixie Labs, a next-generation observability platform for Kubernetes applications, to provide developers with instant Kubernetes-native application observability. The acquisition aims to empower developers with programmatic, unified access to application performance data, leveraging technologies like eBPF at the kernel layer to capture application data automatically without instrumentation code. Pixie's edge-machine intelligence system connects this data with Kubernetes metadata to provide visibility while maintaining data locality. New Relic plans to contribute a self-managed version of Pixie as an open source project and deliver on three key initiatives: Pixie Core, Pixie by New Relic, and Pixie by New Relic, Enterprise Edition. The acquisition is expected to accelerate Pixie's roadmap and complement New Relic's powerful Kubernetes observability features in New Relic One.
