Copilot CLI Prompt Injection Attack Chain
Blog post from NeuralTrust
Adversa AI reported that GitHub Copilot CLI operating in autopilot with broad permissions and a permissive model could be induced through Cryptographic Context Injection (CCI) to fetch an attacker-controlled webpage, decrypt hidden instructions, read local environment files, and transmit their contents externally in about 28 seconds, while equivalent plaintext instructions were refused. The reported technique relies on encrypted payloads evading text-based filters, a decoy decryption key assembled from local secrets, and a later outbound request that carries the harvested data; GitHub validated the report but did not classify it as a product vulnerability because the user initiated the fetch and granted autonomy. The account also describes differing model behavior, with Microsoft’s mai-code-1.1-flash reportedly following the chain in some tests while GPT-5.6 models refused it, making automatic model routing a potential operational concern. Separately, GitHub patched two High-severity Copilot CLI vulnerabilities in 2026 involving shell-command classification bypasses and malicious nested Git repositories. Recommended mitigations emphasize limiting autopilot and blanket permissions, using local or cloud sandboxes, restricting models and network destinations, keeping the CLI updated, isolating secrets from project directories, and recording resolved tool calls to detect suspicious sequences involving untrusted content, code execution, sensitive file reads, and outbound connections.
