Netlify and OpenAI have launched the WebMCP Challenge, offering builders 3 million credits and a $5,000 prize pool for creating agent-native web applications or adding WebMCP support to existing sites. WebMCP is an experimental open standard being drafted through the W3C Web Machine Learning Community Group that allows websites to expose structured browser tools through navigator.modelContext, enabling AI agents to perform defined actions such as searching catalogs, making reservations, and completing forms rather than navigating interfaces designed for human users. Its permission and confirmation mechanisms are intended to ensure agents access only authorized tools and require approval for sensitive actions such as purchases or messages. Developers can test the feature in ChatGPT’s in-app browser or Chrome’s testing flag, and Netlify has released five forkable demonstration applications illustrating product search, checkout, moderated posting, restaurant reservations, and collaborative mystery-solving. The challenge opens August 25, 2026, closes September 3, and announces winners on September 23, with further details available through OpenAI’s challenge page.
