Summary

Neon has launched Neon Realtime in public beta, enabling developers to subscribe to deterministic SQL queries in Lakebase Postgres and receive automatically updated results as underlying data changes, including for joins, aggregates, subqueries, and other expressive query features. The service is designed to eliminate polling, manual refetching, and separate synchronization systems by running within Neon’s database architecture while supporting React components, server-side rendering, optimistic local writes, TypeScript SDKs, and integrations with Drizzle, Kysely, Next.js, TanStack Start, TanStack DB, and Mastra. Neon positions the feature as particularly useful for coding agents, which can enable and configure realtime capabilities through CLI commands, templates, skills, or its MCP server. Realtime is enabled per database branch, scales to zero without persistent subscriptions keeping Postgres active, processes incremental updates on replicas, and is intended to preserve existing schemas, authentication, APIs, ORMs, and frontend state tools. During the beta, the service is free apart from normal database compute and egress costs, but it has limitations including no row-level security, a minimal console experience, evolving protocols, unannounced performance benchmarks, and availability only in four regions.
