Neon is a cloud-based Postgres service that provides a more efficient, cost-effective, and scalable experience compared to traditional Postgres deployments. By separating storage and compute, Neon allows for better manageability, reliability, and performance in cloud environments. The service uses a distributed, multi-tenant storage system written in Rust, which integrates seamlessly with Postgres without requiring any changes to the engine. This architecture provides numerous benefits, including cost savings, elasticity of storage, and seamless backups and restores. Additionally, Neon supports serverless computing, branching for modern development workflows, and open-source licensing. The service is currently available on a waitlist, but plans to open it up for everyone soon.
