How to fix HubSpot API 400: “There was a problem with the request”
Blog post from Nango
HubSpot’s generic 400 Bad Request response can result from many search, pagination, validation, or payload problems, so effective diagnosis begins by capturing the complete response, correlation ID, request details, and timestamp rather than relying on the generic message alone. The recommended process is to test a minimal request, then restore filters, properties, sorting, and pagination cursors incrementally to identify the failing component. Common causes include malformed or incorrectly serialized JSON, use of display labels or contact-specific property names instead of object-specific internal names, unsupported property filters, invalid operators or operand formats, improperly formatted millisecond timestamps, invalid association IDs, oversized search bodies, excess filters, page sizes above limits, mismatched pagination cursors, and attempts to page beyond HubSpot’s 10,000-result search limit. Create and update failures additionally require validation of write payload structure, required fields, pipeline and stage IDs, association type IDs, writable property formats, enumeration values, batch constraints, and newer account-level required-field rules. Repeatable validation failures should be corrected rather than retried, while intermittent unchanged failures may warrant limited backoff retries and checks of HubSpot service status; unresolved minimal-request failures should be escalated with a redacted request and complete diagnostic information. The guide also describes using Nango’s logs, proxy, managed OAuth testing connection, and integration tools to inspect failed HubSpot calls and reproduce corrections.
