API Versioning Strategies for Stable Workflow Integrations
Blog post from n8n
API versioning enables providers to introduce breaking changes while preserving older interfaces, allowing integrations to remain stable and migrate on a controlled schedule. Common approaches place versions in URL paths, HTTP headers, release dates, or query parameters, each with trade-offs involving visibility during debugging and correct cache handling. Integrations should explicitly pin the version they use, monitor deprecation and sunset headers, and handle permanent retirement responses such as HTTP 410 Gone through dedicated migration or error paths rather than retries. The n8n automation platform supports this approach through configurable HTTP requests, version-aware workflow logic, alerts, error workflows, custom code, date-based routing, and execution-history debugging, helping teams test upgrades and respond proactively to API changes.
