Video.js v10, now in beta, represents a significant overhaul of the open-source video player, modernizing it for contemporary web development and preparing it for future advancements such as AI integration. With Mux's involvement, this iteration focuses on reducing bundle sizes by 88%, embracing modern development frameworks like React, Typescript, and Tailwind, and allowing for deep customization. The new architecture splits state, UI, and media into individual, swappable components, enabling developers to create more efficient and tailored video solutions. The introduction of the Streaming Processor Framework (SPF) allows for smaller, purpose-built streaming engines, reducing file sizes for simpler use cases. Video.js v10 also introduces polished UI skins, presets for specific use cases like podcast or background video players, and enhanced AI-support for building and customizing players. Although still in beta with APIs subject to change, the project aims for general availability by mid-2026, with future plans to reach feature parity with previous versions and offer migration guides.
