Earlier this year, a competition hosted by CodeTV and Mux challenged participants to create the most unorthodox video player, culminating in the victory of Christina Martinez with her unique submission. The competition inspired the author, initially believing they had created the worst video player, to explore the intricacies of building a deliberately flawed application. This video player incorporated features such as global play/pause states, unusual playback speed adjustments based on user latitude, and volume control inversely related to noise level, all shared among users via WebSockets. The project also included quirky elements like unpredictable window movements during video seeking and a display of connected users to mimic the chaotic energy of group projects. Despite the intentionally poor design, the author gained valuable experience with WebSockets and Mux's Media Chrome, while thoroughly enjoying the creative process and the event's social aspects.
