An agent is only as good as its harness
Blog post from Mux
Mux describes building a Slack-based video agent to prevent shared internal videos from becoming difficult to find and reuse, using Mux Robots capabilities such as automated summaries, key-moment clips, thumbnails, scene detection, transcripts, and embedding-based multimodal search. Rather than relying solely on general-purpose agent tools such as Codex or Claude, the project emphasizes owning the agent harness to control routing, permissions, asynchronous job progress, context, reliability, and the surrounding user experience. Built with Vercel’s eve framework, the agent can ingest Slack-shared videos into Mux’s existing pipeline, report processing status, and answer thread-based requests for summaries, specific scenes, technical details, clips, or image-assisted searches. The approach separates reusable agent tools, instructions, and specialized subagents from individual interfaces, allowing the same core behavior to potentially operate in Slack, web, or terminal environments. Mux keeps deterministic video-processing tasks in its APIs while assigning the agent responsibility for interpreting intent, selecting tools, coordinating workflows, and communicating results, with instrumentation providing insight into how users combine features and suggesting future workflows for customers’ own video libraries.
