The MongoDB Summer '18 Intern Series provided hands-on experience for interns in computer science and electrical engineering, allowing them to contribute to building the Stitch serverless platform. Julia Ruddy, an Electrical Engineering major, joined the team after being introduced to computer science through a high school Advanced Topics course, where she gained a deep understanding of how computers work. She found that working on software projects was more appealing than hardware development and was drawn to MongoDB due to its established company size and smaller scale compared to larger organizations. Julia worked on various tickets, including creating a generic AWS service in the UI and building a computer game for people with minimal technical skills to help them familiarize themselves with MongoDB query language. Her experience as an intern showed her that software engineering is a collaborative field where collaboration, asking for help, and working on large codebases are common.
