IHS Markit, a world leader in delivering next-generation information, analytics, and solutions, migrated its legacy relational database to MongoDB for its Data Delivery Service. The company aimed to improve application agility, performance, and scalability. With MongoDB's flexible document data model, IHS Markit was able to store and manage large amounts of unstructured data without the need for schema management tasks, resulting in increased productivity among developers. The deployment achieved significant performance improvements, including reads being up to 250x faster and writes 10x faster, reducing latency and enabling on-demand delivery of historical data. The company deployed a four-shard cluster across three sites, providing resilience and scalability to support its expected business growth. Ops Manager was used for provisioning and managing the MongoDB cluster, while continuous backups and cross-shard snapshots ensured data protection. With improved performance and scalability, IHS Markit achieved higher revenue and enabled the development of new applications, such as advanced risk factor computations.
