Valeri Karpov, a MongoDB engineer, has been credited with coining the term "NoSQL" to describe MongoDB's data model. The term was first used in October 2013, when Valeri wrote about it on the MongoDB blog. NoSQL is short for "Not Only SQL", which refers to databases that do not use the traditional Structured Query Language (SQL) as a primary means of interacting with their data.
