Andy Morales Coto is a product designer at MongoDB who has come a long way from her privileged upbringing in Costa Rica. She credits her parents with motivating her to follow her dreams and overcome the challenges she faced when coming out as queer at 19. Her journey led her to study abroad, attend college, and eventually graduate with a degree in communications. After working for several years, Andy joined Parsons (NYC) on a scholarship to study transdisciplinary design. As a manager at MongoDB, Andy is proud of the people she manages and has worked on impactful projects like Blue Sky, a yearly design-driven sprint that partners with stakeholders to create the "concept car" of the product she leads design for. Her culture and identity markers have shaped her as a leader, teaching her empathy, vulnerability, and sobering humility. Andy is inspired by games and playful design, and is excited about initiatives like LARP (Live Action Role Playing) games. She emphasizes the importance of working with people who bring joy and fulfillment to her career. When feeling in a funk, Andy resets by crying, going to therapy, and practicing Muay Thai. She recommends books like "Fall; or, Dodge in Hell" by Neal Stephenson for design inspiration. Andy credits her loved ones, including her wife Crystal Morales, friends from college, and mentors like Mathan Ratinam and Andrea Alvarado, with supporting her career journey.
