The MongoDB Cloud navigation redesign aimed to address customer pain points and improve user experience. The team focused on a single persona, Full-Stack Developer, and designed for the platform as a whole while considering multiple customer personas. They had several goals, including enabling customers to easily discover all products in the platform, switch contexts between Atlas, Charts, and Stitch, establish a product hierarchy that can scale for future releases, and clearly indicate navigational hierarchies on each page. The redesign was constrained by existing visual design and design systems, legacy code, and a need to consider the future product vision and roadmap. The team conducted extensive user research, including card sort studies, in-depth customer interviews, and task analysis, to inform their design decisions. They used an iterative testing method, leveraging RITE (Rapid Iterative Testing Evaluation), to refine their designs and ensure they met the project's goals, creating a simpler mental model and easy-to-use navigation that would scale for future product releases.
