The role of a Database Administrator (DBA) is changing as the industry shifts towards NoSQL technologies like MongoDB, which emphasizes agility and dynamic schema over traditional fixed schema. While DBAs' everyday tasks may take less time with MongoDB, there is still room for their expertise in areas such as backup/recovery processes, capacity planning, maintenance tasks, issue diagnosis, configuration management, replication, and sharding. However, the implementation of schema is now handled at the application level, allowing for rapid agility and reducing the DBA's role as a middleman. In some cases, DBAs may still need to consult on schema design and its impact on performance and maintainability, transforming their role into that of a Database Adviser. This adviser would work closely with development teams to manage the pace of change and provide guidance on best practices while allowing business units to innovate faster than competitors.
