The cloud computing market is growing rapidly, with spending on public cloud platforms expected to reach $23 billion by the end of 2016, representing just under 20% growth over 2015. Private cloud spending is also increasing, with a forecast decline in traditional IT infrastructure spending. The majority of respondents use more than one cloud provider, primarily driven by the need to take advantage of specific features offered by one provider over another. Agility is the top driver for cloud adoption, followed closely by security and data privacy concerns, which are the top inhibitors of cloud usage. Small organizations have increased freedom to innovate quickly and are less likely to be tied to legacy software, while larger organizations are more likely to have mature contracts with software vendors and are therefore less sensitive to the loss of flexibility caused by long-term vendor agreements. The fear of lock-in comes from APIs, services, and data, which can cause particular concern when it comes to security and management. However, MongoDB Atlas is designed to run on multiple public cloud platforms, providing flexibility and freedom from database cloud lock-in.
