Apervita, a specialist cloud-based health infrastructure company, adopted MongoDB to enable secure communication of records and data between stakeholders. To address the challenge of maintaining compliance with stringent regulations while securing vast amounts of personally identifiable information in medical records, Apervita implemented client-side field-level encryption, where data remains encrypted until it reaches the client. This approach eliminates single-breach models and adds a new level of security, allowing users to encrypt every field in their databases without worrying about database implications. By utilizing MongoDB's close relationship with AWS as a platform, Apervita was able to handle client key management, easing compliance and verification requirements. The system provides a nuclear launch-code level of security, requiring multiple keys for access, and is available on multiple cloud providers and platforms, allowing developers to build secure applications without expending additional engineering time.
