Modular 26.7: Opening up MAX
Blog post from Modular
Modular 26.7 makes the MAX graph compiler, runtime, hardware backends, and device extensibility hooks fully source-available under a permissive MAX License that permits commercial use without fees or royalties while seeking to prevent incompatible ecosystem fragmentation through its alliance program. The release is intended to help hardware vendors, researchers, and developers adapt MAX for custom accelerators, with existing NVIDIA, AMD, Apple Silicon, and CPU implementations available as references and additional plugin source planned for Qualcomm and Google TPU hardware. MAX also introduces eager-mode execution for custom operations, allowing developers to test operations immediately and later use the same code in compiled modules, reducing iteration time compared with fully compiled workflows. New model support includes System One or decision models such as Decider 2B, additional language and multimodal models, and GPU-focused optimizations that reportedly improve Qwen and GLM prefill performance by 2.6 times. Mojo 1.2 expands the language’s systems-programming capabilities with pattern matching, including compile-time matching, as well as more expressive trait and generic-constraint features.
