MAX is now source available and open to everyone
Blog post from Modular
Modular has made the full MAX codebase source available, opening its graph compiler, runtime, and CPU and GPU hardware backends alongside previously released kernels, models, serving infrastructure, APIs, and the Mojo compiler toolchain. The new MAX License permits free use, modification, and commercial product development without royalties, while retaining Apache 2.0 licensing for several existing components and restricting publication or distribution of modified MAX source except for contributions back to the main project. It also prohibits using MAX as input for AI-generated reimplementations and requires commercial hosted inference or training services to display the “Modular Accelerated” wordmark. Modular says these restrictions are intended to reduce fragmentation and preserve MAX as a unified heterogeneous-computing platform, while community contributions will initially focus on bug fixes before expanding to broader changes. Following Modular’s entry into Qualcomm, the company also plans an alliance program for hardware vendors, model labs, and data center operators to help guide MAX’s ecosystem, governance, hardware support, and roadmap.
