Summary

Modal now supports HIPAA-compliant workloads for Enterprise customers that sign a Business Associate Agreement by contacting its security team. HIPAA regulates the handling of protected health information by covered entities and service providers, with its Security Rule requiring administrative, physical, and technical safeguards such as access controls, auditing, encryption, and employee training. Modal says it supports compliance through security practices, SOC 2 audits, least-privilege data access, deletion of function inputs and outputs after retrieval, and gVisor-based workload isolation. Although most Modal features are covered by its BAA, customers should not store PHI in Volumes, Images except filesystem or directory snapshots, Memory Snapshots, or user code.
