How we built a virtual filesystem for our Assistant

To enhance the performance and efficiency of their documentation assistant, the team developed ChromaFs, a virtual filesystem that replaces traditional sandboxes with a more streamlined solution built on their existing Chroma database. This innovation allows the assistant to simulate a filesystem environment using UNIX commands, significantly reducing session creation time from 46 seconds to approximately 100 milliseconds and eliminating additional compute costs. ChromaFs leverages a TypeScript reimplementation of bash and employs a pluggable IFileSystem interface to facilitate immediate and cost-effective data retrieval. By translating filesystem operations into database queries, ChromaFs supports scalable, contextually rich navigation and read-only access to documentation, addressing challenges associated with latency, cost, and resource management in high-frequency usage scenarios.
