More, Better, Faster: How we automate Metabase releases
Blog post from Metabase
Metabase transformed its release process from a manual, error-prone checklist in 2022 into an automated continuous-delivery system that publishes daily patches and weekly minor releases. The effort began by converting scattered Bash and Clojure scripts into tested TypeScript functions orchestrated through GitHub Actions, initially separating build, test, and publishing workflows before combining build and test stages. The team later reused binaries already produced and validated by the full test suite, reducing release time by about 30 minutes while increasing confidence in released artifacts. As automation matured, Metabase increased its cadence from biweekly releases to weekly releases, then weekday patches for the two latest major versions, using scheduled workflows and conservative testing gates to select the newest passing commit. An internal CI interface now supports on-demand releases in three clicks, enabling faster delivery of cloud changes and urgent customer fixes. As a result, Metabase Cloud users receive updates automatically, while self-hosted users can choose whether and when to install newly available patches.
