Summary

Metabase dashboard subscriptions automate scheduled email reports and Slack messages containing dashboard question results, with hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly delivery options, attachments such as CSV, XLSX, or dashboard PDFs, and optional skipping of empty results. Available across all Metabase editions, subscriptions can be sent to users or external email recipients and use the creator’s data permissions; default dashboard filters apply on all plans, while Pro and Enterprise support subscription-specific filters, approved email domains, and unbranded messages. Administrators configure SMTP for self-hosted email or connect a Slack app once, after which users can create and test subscriptions through the dashboard interface. The API refers to subscriptions as “pulses” and supports creating, listing, updating, testing, and filtering them through API-key-authenticated requests, though its unversioned pulse endpoints are planned for eventual removal. Reports run at the scheduled time using live database queries or cached results according to applicable policies, with timing determined by Metabase’s report or server time zone. Compared with building a custom digest system, subscriptions centralize scheduling, recipients, filters, attachments, delivery integrations, and metric definitions around the same dashboards people use, while custom jobs remain useful for product-specific communications such as per-customer summaries.
