What Is Agentic RAG? How It Works And When To Use It
Blog post from Mem0
Agentic RAG expands traditional retrieval-augmented generation from a fixed, single-pass retrieve-and-generate workflow into an adaptive system in which AI agents plan searches, use multiple tools and sources, validate evidence, retain memory, and iterate through Reason–Act–Observe loops before answering. Standard RAG remains fast, economical, and suitable for simple questions tied to a single knowledge source, but it cannot easily recover from weak retrieval, reconcile conflicting information, or handle multi-step and cross-source questions. Agentic systems use orchestrators, memory, tool access, and validation layers, often with specialized routing, planning, tool-use, and ReAct agents, to support tasks such as database lookups, API calls, web searches, and cross-document reasoning. This added capability can improve accuracy, faithfulness, and coverage for high-stakes or complex use cases, but also increases latency, token costs, operational complexity, and risks such as retrieval drift, repetitive tool loops, excessive context, and dependence on poor source data. Effective production deployments require guardrails, confidence and stopping thresholds, observability, and evaluation of retrieval precision, tool-call accuracy, step efficiency, hallucination rates, and grounding, while emerging standards such as Model Context Protocol and multimodal retrieval may further support more connected and adaptive pipelines.
