Snap builds with Mapbox to deliver wearable AR navigation
Blog post from Mapbox
Snap's SPECS team collaborated with Mapbox to explore augmented reality (AR) navigation that integrates into the real world, moving beyond traditional phone-based systems. This innovative approach aims to address the common challenges of mobile navigation, such as disorientation and constant screen-checking, by utilizing AR glasses that display maps and guidance directly in the user's line of sight only when needed. The partnership allowed SPECS to leverage Mapbox's decade-long expertise in flexible, high-performance location platforms to create a seamless AR navigation experience. By optimizing the Mapbox Navigation SDK to fit the compact hardware of the AR glasses, the team ensured efficient, on-device operation while maintaining a focus on innovation rather than building maps from scratch. The collaboration also benefited from the SPECS Native Development Kit (NDK), which facilitated the use of the Mapbox Navigation SDK on SPECS devices without rewriting code, enabling rapid experimentation and development.
