In preparation for the Tour de Tohoku, the Mapbox Japan team visited Ishinomaki City and Onagawa Town to conduct an on-site test of their real-time map system, focusing on communication challenges posed by the mountainous coastal terrain. The test, carried out from a car and involving both on-site and remote team members, revealed that while 4G network speeds were insufficient at times, the auto-reconnect feature of their streaming app ensured continuous video despite interruptions. The team successfully tested the official event app, which now provides more accurate real-time rider location updates by estimating positions between data transmissions. Enhancements to the user experience include a replay feature for tracking riders and a Twitter List Display for sharing messages, alongside a Support Button for sending virtual encouragement. Ongoing updates will refine the map before the event, aiming to engage viewers and support the local community, which continues to recover from the Great East Japan Earthquake.
