The Opportunity Project (TOP) is a unique US federal government initiative that fosters collaboration across sectors to develop innovative solutions using open data, akin to an extended hackathon. Teams, including Mapbox and its community partners, participated in various sprints to address issues such as making the USDA's National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) more accessible to farmers and analyzing refugee settlement data with the UN Refugee Agency to understand community formation. Additionally, Rutgers University students developed a dashboard for organizing beach cleanups using data from NOAA and other agencies, while OpenAQ created a user-friendly report builder for clean air advocacy. New Light Technologies utilized NAIP imagery to produce precision agriculture tools. These projects underscore the collaborative spirit encouraged by TOP and demonstrate the potential for impactful, data-driven solutions to social and environmental challenges.
