What is an Email API?
Blog post from Mailtrap
An email API is a cloud-based interface that lets applications connect programmatically to email service providers for functions such as composing, sending, scheduling, personalizing, tracking, and managing emails at scale. In a typical workflow, an application sends an authenticated API request containing recipient and message data, the service generates and delivers the message through email infrastructure, records delivery and engagement events, and returns a status response. The main categories include transactional APIs for event-triggered messages such as receipts and password resets, contextual APIs for dynamically personalized marketing content, and marketing APIs for integrating campaign, contact, and template management features. Unlike SMTP, which is a lower-level protocol for transferring email between servers, APIs offer greater abstraction, analytics, security controls, automation, and customization, while SMTP may suit simpler use cases. Providers supply the infrastructure, integration tools, reputation management, scalability, and support needed for reliable delivery, and selection should consider performance, sending controls, templates, webhooks, SDK support, personalization, and customer service. The article also uses Mailtrap as an example of an API service whose setup involves creating an account, verifying a domain, adding integration code, testing delivery, and optionally enabling tracking, unsubscribe settings, and webhooks.
