What is a Spam Trap: Guide for Email Marketers and Software Developers
Blog post from Mailtrap
Spam traps are email addresses used by providers and anti-spam organizations to identify senders with poor list-collection and maintenance practices, and they differ from disposable addresses because they are not created by real users for temporary use. They include pristine addresses created solely to catch unsolicited mail, recycled addresses that were once active but later repurposed after long inactivity, and typo-based addresses resulting from common misspellings. Sending to these traps can reduce inbox placement, harm sender and domain reputation, trigger spam filtering or blocklisting, and potentially create compliance risks, with pristine traps posing the greatest threat. Spam traps commonly enter mailing lists through purchased or scraped contacts, unvalidated sign-ups, neglected inactive subscribers, and abandoned role-based addresses. Recommended prevention measures include building lists organically, using real-time validation and double opt-in confirmation, regularly removing invalid or unengaged contacts, monitoring bounces and engagement, and carefully reviewing risky acquisition sources and role-based accounts.
