What are webhooks and how to use them
Blog post from Mailtrap
Webhooks are HTTP-based callbacks that automatically deliver real-time event data from one application to a designated endpoint, enabling immediate processing and analysis. In email infrastructure, Mailtrap webhooks can notify applications or analytics systems about delivery failures, bounces, opens, link clicks, unsubscribes, and spam reports, while third-party tools such as Zapier or cloud functions can be used when a custom endpoint is unavailable. Setting up webhooks generally requires a publicly accessible URL, commonly receives POST requests in JSON format, and should include security protections such as TLS/HTTPS, Basic Authentication, or identification tokens to reduce the risk of unauthorized access. Because webhook events are asynchronous and can be difficult to debug, testing with dummy payloads, endpoint-inspection tools, and staging environments is recommended before production deployment. Mailtrap users can configure webhooks through its settings by adding a secure public URL, selecting events to monitor, testing the configuration, and saving it after confirmation, providing a lightweight way to track email deliverability metrics at scale.
