Email spam filters are security tools that analyze incoming and, in some cases, outgoing messages to identify unsolicited, malicious, or suspicious email, then reject, quarantine, or route it to junk folders. They help prevent phishing, malware, data theft, inbox clutter, and compromised devices, though they can produce false positives that block legitimate mail or false negatives that allow spam through. Filters may be deployed as on-premises gateways, scalable cloud services, or client-side software, and commonly evaluate content, headers, IP and domain blocklists, sender authentication records such as SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, predefined rules, language or country, and challenge-response tests. Machine-learning systems, particularly Bayesian-style classifiers, can learn from spam reports and message patterns but may be vulnerable to evasion techniques. Major email providers combine multiple undisclosed filtering methods, user feedback, reputation signals, authentication, and content analysis to defend against evolving threats. Senders can improve deliverability by maintaining a strong reputation, obtaining recipient consent, using properly configured authentication, keeping content and links balanced, supporting unsubscribes, and avoiding practices commonly associated with spam.
