PTR, or reverse DNS, records map an IP address back to a hostname, complementing A records that map hostnames to IP addresses. Email servers commonly compare forward and reverse DNS results before accepting mail, so a missing or mismatched PTR record can increase the likelihood of messages being marked as spam or rejected, particularly for bulk senders. PTR records are configured by the IP address owner or hosting provider in reverse DNS zones, using reversed IPv4 octets with the in-addr.arpa suffix or ip6.arpa for IPv6, and should produce forward-confirmed reverse DNS in which the hostname’s A record points back to the same IP. Although DNS permits multiple PTR entries, using one canonical hostname per IP is generally recommended because mail servers may select records unpredictably. Administrators can verify PTR configuration through dig or nslookup commands or online lookup tools, while broader deliverability testing remains necessary because PTR records are only one part of email authentication, reputation, blacklist status, and spam-filter compliance.
