Outlook’s New High-Volume Sender Requirements Update: What’s Changed?

Effective May 5, 2025, Microsoft requires senders delivering more than 5,000 emails daily to Outlook consumer addresses, including outlook.com, live.com, and hotmail.com, to meet stronger authentication standards intended to reduce spam and spoofing. Messages from noncompliant senders may be directed to the Junk folder, while the requirements currently do not explicitly cover corporate Microsoft 365 mailboxes or lower-volume senders. Senders must configure SPF to authorize their sending IPs, use valid DKIM signatures aligned with their From domain, and publish a DMARC policy of at least p=none, with SPF or DKIM authentication aligned to the visible sender domain. Microsoft also recommends maintaining reply-capable sender addresses, providing clearly visible unsubscribe links, regularly removing invalid or inactive contacts, and using consent-based, transparent messaging practices to protect deliverability. These standards broadly align with requirements previously introduced by Gmail and Yahoo, and email delivery platforms such as Mailtrap offer authentication support, deliverability monitoring, provider-specific statistics, and bulk-sending tools to help organizations comply.
