Multiple SPF Records Do’s and Don’ts
Blog post from Mailtrap
Sender Policy Framework (SPF) authenticates email senders through DNS TXT records, and a domain should have only one SPF record because multiple records can cause recipient servers to return an SPF failure. Duplicate records commonly occur when organizations add a new email provider without incorporating its authorization settings into an existing record; the recommended remedy is to merge mechanisms into a single entry, using the v=spf1 declaration only at the beginning and the all mechanism only at the end. Domains can check SPF configurations with online validation and merge tools or manually through an nslookup TXT query, then test outgoing messages in a safe email-testing environment. Effective SPF management also requires staying within the limit of 10 DNS lookups, including lookups triggered by nested include mechanisms, and respecting the 255-character limit per TXT string; longer policies can be split across records through included subdomains, although each added include consumes another DNS lookup. SPF is presented as one part of reliable email delivery alongside DKIM and DMARC.
