Summary

The CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 requires bulk email senders to provide recipients with a way to opt out, and the List-Unsubscribe email header offers a prominent, inbox-level alternative to unsubscribe links placed only in message bodies. Supported by standards such as RFC 2369, this header can improve sender credibility, reduce spam complaints from recipients unable or unwilling to locate a body link, and remove disengaged subscribers that can lower campaign engagement. It can be implemented through a mailto address that processes unsubscribe requests, an HTTP or HTTPS landing-page URL, or preferably both to accommodate varying email-client support. One-click unsubscription is increasingly important, particularly under Google and Yahoo’s 2024 sender requirements, which emphasize an easy one-click process without extra barriers. Senders can configure the header through their mail server or email service provider and verify its presence and potential deliverability issues using test inboxes and tools such as Email Sandbox, Litmus, and Mail-tester.com.
