Gmail Spam Filter Not Working – The Whys and How to Prevent It
Blog post from Mailtrap
Gmail’s spam filtering generally functions continuously, but legitimate messages may be misclassified because of broad user-created filters, past spam reports, weak sender or IP reputation, blacklisting, algorithm updates, inconsistent recipient behavior, sending-volume spikes, or third-party integrations. Although Google’s filtering criteria are not fully disclosed, senders can improve inbox placement by maintaining consistent sending patterns, limiting complaints and bounces, monitoring engagement, using relevant non-spammy content, and regularly removing inactive or invalid addresses. The guidance also emphasizes testing emails before delivery, authenticating domains with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, providing unsubscribe links, complying with applicable regulations and Google and Yahoo sender requirements, and using feedback and analytics to identify deliverability issues. When recipients report missing opted-in messages, they can mark emails as not spam, move them to the appropriate inbox category, or use Gmail’s priority features, but senders are advised not to request proactive whitelisting or filter changes.
