Email IP Reputation: Everything You Need to Know to Get Emails Delivered
Blog post from Mailtrap
Email IP reputation is an ISP-assessed measure of an IP address’s trustworthiness that strongly affects whether transactional and marketing messages reach inboxes, spam folders, or are rejected. Reputation is shaped by sending volume and consistency, recipient engagement, spam complaints, bounce rates, blacklisting, and malicious activity, while domain reputation separately evaluates the sender’s domain history; both contribute to overall sender reputation. Shared IP addresses are influenced by the behavior of all users and may suit lower-volume or irregular senders, whereas dedicated IPs offer greater control but require gradual warming, consistent high volume, and well-maintained engaged lists. Senders can identify their sending IP through email headers and assess its standing using feedback loops, ESP data, deliverability monitoring, or tools such as Google Postmaster Tools, Cisco Talos Intelligence, Sender Score, and Barracuda Reputation System. Improving reputation generally involves using reputable providers, implementing SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and PTR records, using double opt-in subscriptions, maintaining organic and active mailing lists, controlling sending volumes, and investigating and reducing bounces.
