Email Bounce: Everything there’s to know about it
Blog post from Mailtrap
An email bounce occurs when a recipient’s server rejects or cannot accept a message, generating a delivery error that can harm sender reputation, engagement metrics, and future deliverability when frequent. Bounce codes help identify causes, with 4xx codes generally signaling temporary soft bounces and 5xx codes indicating permanent hard bounces. Soft bounces may result from full inboxes, overloaded or temporarily unavailable servers, oversized messages, or spam filtering, and can often be addressed by retrying later, reducing message size, changing sending schedules, or revising content. Hard bounces commonly stem from invalid or inactive addresses, authentication failures, or domain and IP blocklisting, requiring list cleanup, subscriber verification, properly configured SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records, and sometimes blacklist removal. The article recommends maintaining a bounce rate below 2% by using double opt-in subscriptions, validating addresses at collection, monitoring bounce patterns, and optimizing email content, formatting, authentication, and subject lines for legitimate, relevant communication.
