Email Accessibility Guide
Blog post from Mailtrap
Email accessibility is presented as both an inclusion imperative and a marketing advantage, helping businesses reach more people, improve user experience, strengthen brand loyalty, support social responsibility, and reduce legal risks associated with standards such as WCAG and laws including the ADA. Because email rendering varies widely across platforms, accessible messages require careful coding and repeated testing across email clients, devices, display modes, and assistive technologies. Recommended practices include marking layout tables as presentational, using sufficient color contrast and compatible color codes, declaring the email language, applying semantic headings and paragraphs without skipping hierarchy, using readable font sizes and line spacing, and distinguishing visual emphasis from semantic importance. Images should have meaningful, context-specific alternative text or null alt text when decorative, while ARIA attributes can improve the usability of icons, captions, and image-based controls for screen-reader users. The text also advises avoiding or limiting animations due to accessibility and photosensitivity concerns, and recommends using automated tools, client previews, real devices, and screen readers such as VoiceOver, TalkBack, and NVDA to validate accessibility before sending campaigns.
